Found this to be very insightful of how to think about hardware strategy in the smart city startups space.
Main points are :
1. If your building hardware make sure there is enough value beyond looking better or costing less.
2. Additionally, you should see opportunities to lock in or get access to proprietary data that can make the solution valuable beyond initial sale.
3. If you can access data of existing hardware (without deploying your own), even better.
